Top 6 Questions about Designing and Manufacturing a Library Card

When it comes to creating a new card for your library, there are several questions you should ask yourself to determine which product best fits your needs.

First you should know that library cards, library card key tags, and key tag cards are all produced exactly the same way except for the die cut is different for each. So to determine which type of card is best suited to your goals and the needs of your customers, ask yourself these questions:

1. Who will be using the card?

  • Do I need a card that is the same for every patron or do I need different types of cards for different age groups (children, teens, adults, seniors)?
  • Do I want to give my patrons a choice of copy so they can choose something they relate to or enjoy (that is not related to age)?

2. How long does the card need to last?

  • Is this a short term project where it only needs to last for a year or less?
  • Or does it need to last for the long term?

3. Will a regular card or a key tag card work best? Remember that some people prefer to carry a card in their purse or wallet while others prefer to attach it to their key chain for easy access.

4. Do I need to issue a card key tag? Consider that most patrons prefer both sizes.

5. If I don’t have the budget to issue both a library card key tag and regular card, what is the most economical way to give my patrons a choice?

6. Do I need more than one card and one key tag per set?

  • Do I want the family to have the same number on the card so that anyone can have access to the account?

Once you have decided which die cut will work best for your library card, you can address the copy options. Do you want a basic card with your library’s name and a drawing on it or is there something special about your library like a photograph, statue or object that represents your library and the patrons it serves? Did someone make a gift to the library and have a statue erected in their honor?

Please have a look at the various categories under “View Samples” on our site (in the top navigation bar) to get an idea of what some of our patrons have done. After you’ve viewed the samples, you may think “Wow, those look great but we don’t have a designer or the budget to hire one so I guess we’re stuck with our current design.”
